Overview
This advanced course is designed to deepen previously acquired knowledge through advanced flight test techniques. Particular emphasis is placed on envelope expansion procedures—especially in the context of prototype testing, initial flight operations and high-risk test scenarios including flutter. Additional focus is given to one-engine-inoperative (OEI) operations, which are critical for multi-engine aircraft certification.
Key Features
Participants benefit from an expanded range of training aircraft compared to the CAT 2 course. The fleet includes both historically significant aircraft and state-of-the-art large transport platforms, offering exposure to a broad spectrum of flight control systems, test objectives and operational challenges. The course also addresses advanced certification standards such as EASA CS-25 and strengthens participants' understanding of modern flight control architectures. To support this, students receive focused simulator training and conduct missions on Variable Stability Systems (VSS)—in-flight simulators capable of replicating different stability and control characteristics under real conditions. To further enhance safety awareness and operational readiness, the course includes dedicated in-flight emergency training, featuring professionally supervised parachute jump exercises.
Course Structure
Training is organized into 6 integrated blocks:
- flight test management
- performance testing
- flight control systems and handling qualities testing
- systems testing
- FTI / engines / human factors
- final project
The modular setup mirrors the CAT 2 course and allows for flexible completion in two separate phases, if desired. As part of the curriculum, students also participate in a dedicated field trip to aircraft manufacturers and aircraft modification centers to gain valuable insights into the workflows and operational structures of various design and production organizations.
Prerequisites:
- completed CAT 2 course
- basic English language proficiency
- valid medical certification confirming physical fitness (Class 2 or Class 1)
- engineering degree or equivalent technical background
Note: The course has a high academic and operational workload.
