Course: CAT 1 Bridge Course Rotary Wing

Overview

This course is designed to deepen previously acquired knowledge through advanced flight test techniques tailored to rotary-wing platforms.

Key Features

A particular focus is placed on procedures for expanding the helicopter flight envelope, including high-risk testing scenarios, as well as operations under one-engine-inoperative (OEI) conditions. The course also addresses helicopter-specific testing elements such as ADS-33 compliance, teetering and rigid rotor assessments, height/velocity envelope exploration, engine-off landings (EOL) including relight procedures, and Category A takeoff and landing profiles. Core flight test skills are further reinforced through autorotation procedures and a comprehensive final evaluation exercise.
To prepare participants for greater responsibilities within complex test programs and certification processes, the course also covers more comprehensive certification standards such as EASA CS-29. Additionally, the course strengthens students’ understanding of modern flight control systems. To support this, participants will undergo simulator-based training as well as perform missions with Variable Stability Systems (VSS) — in-flight simulators capable of replicating the stability and dynamic characteristics of various helicopter configurations during flight.

Course Structure

The training is organized into six blocks:

  • flight test management
  • performance testing
  • flight control systems and handling qualities testing
  • systems testing
  • FTI / engines / human factors
  • final project

Prerequisites:

  • completed CAT 2 course
  • basic English language proficiency
  • valid medical certification confirming physical fitness (Class 2 or Class 1)
  • engineering degree or equivalent technical background

Note: The course has a high academic and operational workload.

You may be new to EFT — but we’re not new to ambition. Our mission is simple: to become the best in flight test training and support. That means hard work, real accountability and a team you can count on. We give everything to help you reach your goals — and often, just a little more.

Rolf Hellbutsch, Accountable Manager

Training in flight test is not just about passing knowledge — it’s about building confidence, precision, and operational judgment. At EFT, we design every course to be demanding, relevant, and directly applicable. As Head of Training, my goal is simple: to make sure our participants leave ready for the mission — not just qualified, but capable.

Dr. Dieter Reisinger, Head of Training

At EFT, I focus on building a strong theoretical foundation that supports safe, effective flight testing. Seeing our students connect rigorous academic principles with hands-on practice is what makes this role so fulfilling.

Peter Hemmert, Chief Theoretical Knowledge Instructor
